SAIL's Steel Production and Iron Ore Supply Improve Well

Rakesh Kulshreshta, executive director with Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), said the company's steel production was not affected by the abolition of some miners' licenses, adding that the company has 4 billion mt of iron ore reserves, which is predicted to be sufficient for the next 50 years with the implementation of new iron ore production projects.

Rakesh also said SAIL planed invest US$2.5 billion to double iron ore production from its captive mines to 35.5 million tonnes a year, including the development of the 1.8 billion-tonne iron ore reserves at Chiria in the eastern Indian province of Jharkhand and the greenfield project for development of its Rowghat iron ore reserves with an annual production of 14 million tonnes.

Rakesh indicated Inida will see a substantial increase of steel production in the next two to three years with the addition of new steelmaking facilities.

Due to ongoing price fluctuations for imported iron ore, Karachi-based Pakistani long steel producer Pakistan Steel Mills plans to use local iron ore resources and so has.

Pakistan Steel Mills has already purchased leases for three iron ore mines in the province of Balochistan and set up separate departments to focus on the exploitation of the mines in question.

A spokesman for the company said in a statement that iron ore from the mines would cost about 50% less than imported iron ore.

Sheffield Forgemasters will outline its pioneering technical developments, including computer simulation, material developments and world leading forging techniques to leaders in the global forging industry at a high-profile international conference.

The engineering specialist will share the scope of its research, a body of work which places Forgemasters at the forefront of manufacture for key industries, including civil nuclear power production and defence, at September's International Forgemasters' Meeting (IFM) in Pittsburgh, USA.

Delegates from Forgemasters will present the papers, which cover advances in metallurgical analysis, development of innovative forging methods for ultra-large forgings and specialist forging techniques tailored to the nuclear power market.

Dr Jesus Talamantes-Silva, director of Forgemasters' research and development facility, said: "This research and the papers we will deliver at the IFM are extremely important to the development of Sheffield Forgemasters' portfolio within key industry sectors and will benefit this industry on a global level.

"Our work into such projects as the development of hollow ingots, extrusion techniques for large-scale forgings, definition of inclusions in steel making, production of large diameter tubesheets for civil nuclear power and development of forged steels for the nuclear industry has taken many years of input and a substantial investment.

"The papers have been refined so that these projects, as separate bodies of work, can be presented at the industry's most illustrious conference."
