Technical appraisal conference on Baosteel Magnetic Oriented Silicon Steel applied by large voltage transformers in Three Gorges Project was held in Shanghai recently. Conclusion from appraisal specialists was Baosteel magnetic oriented silicon steel with autonomous and integrated innovative R&D reached world class level in all performance parameters, thus could be applied by large voltage transformers of 500 KV and above in Three Gorges Project.

Conference was organized by State Council Three Gorges Project Construction Commission Key Equipment Manufacture Inspection Group. Group leader, Mr Lu Yansun members of Chinese Academy of Engineering Yin Ruijue, Mr Zhu Yinghao, Mr Wang Guodong, etc President of Chinese Society for Metals Mr Wen Yuqing academician, General Manager of China Iron & Steel Research Institute Group Mr Gan Yong, academician Mr Zhang Shourong of Wisco, academician Mr Wang Yide of Tisco, Mr Li Shijun, executive deputy secretary general of Chinese Iron & Steel Association, General Manager of Three Gorges Project, Mr Yang Qing, Mr Xu Lejiang, Mr He Wenbo, Mr Ma Guoqiang, Mr Li Haiping, Mr Zhou Jianfeng from Baosteel, related leaders, specialists and voltage manufacturers from Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Energy Bureau, Three Gorges Project, State Grid and Metallurgy Industry attended the conference. Li Qin, deputy-director of Technology & Equipment Department, State Council Three Gorges Project Construction Commission Executive Office hosted the conference.

Due to technical and quality reasons, magnetic oriented silicon steel used in manufacturing large voltage transformers had been imported, which in long term would do harm to stability of China's energy industry. It would be of vital importance in Three Gorges Project follow up construction to use local qualified oriented silicon steel with stable performance. After sustained endeavors in oriented silicon steel R&D, Baosteel autonomous and integrated silicon steel facility was put into stream in 2008 to bolster national energy strategy and shoulder social responsibilities. Since then, Baosteel consecutively produced serials of magnetic oriented silicon steel covering all grades based on autonomous innovation, among which some had been commercially used by numerous domestic medium and large-size manufacturers to produce voltage transformers for export, paving the way for localized production of magnetic oriented silicon steel.

Results of the appraisal procedure were: Baosteel had made contribution for localized production of high-grade oriented silicon steel through autonomous integrated innovation with over 10 years' R&D and two years' practice; Baosteel magnetic oriented silicon steel could ensure commercial and stable supply for large voltage transformers of 500kv and above. Baosteel was encouraged to further enhance product quality, conduct research on customer technology appliance and supply high grade silicon steel for large voltage transformers.
