It is reported that in the first half of 2012, Baosteel aimed at high-end heavy plate market and produced abrasion-resistant heavy plate and quenched and tempered steel of 50,000 tonnes.

Wide heavy plate is mainly used in shipbuilding, oceaneering, machinery, pressure vessel and oil and natural gas transportation industries. Baosteel now owns two heavy plate production lines of 5000mm and 4200mm, with total annual design capacity of 3.4 million tonne.

In 2011, Baosteel sold wide heavy plate products of 2.318 million tonnes, with market shares accounting for 6.2% of domestic total.
