
According to Mr Zhou Shengxian minister of Ministry of Environmental Protection, the number of pollution incidents hit record high last year showing rise of 26.6%MoM. Among these incidents, over half of them were related to heavy metal.
Mr Zhou said MEP would take special actions this year to regulate companies with heavy metal emission and enhance the supervision to steel industry like sectors which have big problems of pollution.
Galvanization sector under steel industry was mentioned by Mr Zhou in his speech. Besides, the ministry will launch all round investigation on lead, cadmium, mercury, chromium, arsenic pollution sources to stunt the heavy metal pollution.
Mr Zhou said more than 10,000 environmental law issues were registered by MEP in 2009. Among them, 2587 cases were marked as serious incidents. Last year, MEP shut down 744 companies, ordered 841 companies to stop production for treatment, limited 810 companies to treat their pollution within certain period and investigated 119 persons responsible for their legal responsibility.
