Yonhap reported that Hyundai Motor Co has sold over 200,000 units of its compact passenger vehicle Avante HD in China for the second straight year.

In the first 11 months of 2010, Hyundai sold 213,625 units of the Avante HD, sold as the Elantra Yue Dong in China. The car is only Hyundai's second vehicle to sell over 200,000 units in one country in a year, following its earlier compact sedan, the Excel, which set the company's record for single year sales with 263,610 units sold in the United States in 1987.

Boosted by the performance of its compact passenger car, Hyundai Motor's overall sales in China also jumped to a record high of over 700,000 vehicles.

"Beijing Hyundai (Hyundai's China unit) set its sales target at 670,000 units, but the sales exceeded the target in early December and reached over 700,000 as of today."

Company officials said that the company's mid size sedan Sonata may also become a 200,000 seller in the United States this year, with 180,659 units sold there in the first 11 months of 2010.

Five other vehicles of Hyundai, including the mini passenger vehicle i10 sold in India, have already sold 100,000 units in single markets, with three vehicles of Hyundai's affiliate, Kia Motors Corporation, also expected to reach the 100,000 mark by the end of 2010.

A group official said that "A car with sales of over 100,000 in a single country means the vehicle has won the trust of people there. Such achievements in the United States and China are especially more meaningful as those are the countries where competition is the most fierce."
