The Chinese market went on a rampage with prices of flat and long products declining rapidly during the week summarized by the following highlights:

1) Rebar prices plummeted by a whopping 4% on April 1st

2) Flat product prices fell heavily in the last couple of days by 4% to 7%

3) Baosteel has lowered prices by CNY 200 per tonne to CNY 300 per tonne for hot-rolled products, CNY 200 per tonne for cold rolled products, CNY 500 per tonne for wire rod and pipes, and CNY 200 per tonne to CNY 450 per tonne for high value added products such as galvanized and color coated products.

With the euphoria of Stimulus Package rapidly vanishing, manufacturers are left with no option but to mitigate their losses by production pruning and writing off inventory with alacrity.
