
China Knowledge reported that the National Development and Reform Commission, China top economic planner has granted approval to form the Chengdu-Chongqing Economic Zone, the first regional economic zone in Southwest China.
According to the initial plans, the economic zone will cover 15 cities of Southwest China Sichuan Province and 31 districts and counties of the Chongqing Municipality.
The economic zone which will have an area of 206,100 square kilometers with a population of 98.41 million is expected to be an economic powerhouse to drive the western development and become a base for advanced equipment manufacturing, modern services, advanced technology and agricultural products.
Reportedly, the economic zone plans are waiting for approval from the State Council. China currently has three regional economic zones, the Yangtze River Delta, the Pearl River Delta and the Bohai Economic Rim.
