The Ministry of Environment & Forests has accorded environmental clearance for the Kudgi Super Thermal Power Project Stage I (3x800 MW) of power major NTPC Ltd, which is being set up in Bijapur district of Karnataka.

The board of directors of NTPC Ltd cleared the investment proposal of INR 15,166 crore for setting up Stage I of the project recently. NTPC would be awarding the main plant package and taking up other infrastructure development works shortly. NTPC has sourced the 800 MW units through bulk tendering process.

The Kudgi Super Thermal Power Project is the first project to be set up in Karnataka by NTPC with a total installed capacity of 4,000 MW, in two stages, with phase one of 2,400 MW. The project will feature super critical boilers known for superior output. The coal for this project would be met from NTPC’s own coal mine at Pakhri Barwadi in Jharkhand.

The Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board recently handed over 1,923 acres required for the main plant area. Land acquisition for balance 1,600 acres is in progress.

To meet the water requirement, the Karnataka Government, through its Water Resources Department, has sanctioned 5.2 TMC of water per annum from Almatti Dam which is 18 km from the project site.

According to NTPC, the power to be generated from this project would be supplied to Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Puducherry.
