Gangavaram port near Visakhapatnam, with five berths, has handled 28 million tonnes of cargo ever since it started commercial operations in 2008.

According to a press release, the port, which is planning to commission four more berths by 2013, is aiming at a throughput of 40 million tonnes by 2015.

The port offers faster turnaround of vessels with its mechanized facilities and also it can service bigger vessels, because of the deep draft, adds the release. It has achieved several operational milestones. Recently, the GPL achieved the highest discharge rate for a Panamax vessel MV Welsucess by discharging 65,349 tonnes of coking coal in 24 hours, improving on its earlier record of 61,677 tonnes.
