The government reviewed the progress of coal mines allocated to companies, including TATA Steel, Coal India, SAIL, NTPC and JSW Steel, for captive use in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, a step aimed at augmenting the production of fossil fuel.
A source in the Coal Ministry said that "Today a meeting chaired by Zohra Chatterji, Additional Secretary, Coal Ministry, was held wherein the government reviewed the progress of captive coal blocks in the states of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand.”
Another source in the ministry said that the progress of coal blocks of firms, including Jindal Power, Jindal Steel & Power, BALCO and MMTC was also reviewed during the meeting.
The companies that have been allotted blocks in Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and West Bengal will participate in the meeting tomorrow.
Cracking down on firms sitting idle on coal blocks allocated for captive use, the Coal Ministry had cancelled the allotment of blocks to DVC, Andhra Pradesh Power Generation Corporation, Tenughat Vidyut Nigam, Bihar State Mineral Development Corporation and Jharkhand State Electricity Board.
