The Indian Railways have generated INR 49209.21 crore of revenue earnings from commodity wise freight traffic during April to December 2011 as compared to INR 44789.41 crore during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 4.59%.

Railways carried 704.81 million tonnes of commodity wise freight traffic during April to December 2011 as compared to 673.31 million tonnes carried during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 4.68%. The Net Tonne Kilo Metres went up from 444515 million during April to December 2010 to 466968 million during April to December 2011, showing an increase of 4.68%

Out of the total earnings of INR 6102.45 crore from commodity wise freight traffic during the month of December 2011,
INR 2548.54 crore came from transportation of 41.01 million tonnes of coal
INR 543.64 crore from 8.94 million tonnes of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic user
INR 562.73 crore from 9.37 million tonnes of cement
INR 403.71 crore from 3.94 million tonnes of foodgrains
INR 328.89 crore from 3.52 million tonnes of petroleum oil and lubricant
INR 369.32 crore from 3.10 million tonnes of Pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points
INR 484.77 crore from 5.61 million tonnes of fertilizers
INR 100.41 crore from 1.12 million tonnes of raw material for steel plants except iron ore
INR 303.64 crore from 3.46 million tonnes by container service and INR 456.80 crore from 6.74 million tonnes of other goods.
