
Indian Railways is launching massive campaign to generate awareness on prevention and control of HIV/AIDS on the occasion of World AIDS Day on December 1st 2010 by organizing meetings, seminars, discussion meetings, display of posters/pamphlets folders, rallies etc throughout the Indian Railways network. In addition, Health Check Up Camps, special counseling and testing of railway health service beneficiaries in collaboration with trade unions, women welfare organizations, scouts and guides and St John Ambulance brigade will be organized through the Indian Railways network.
Known for being in the forefront for meeting various social obligations, Railways give concession in Second Class fare in trains to AIDS affected persons to visit the Anti-Retroviral Therapy centers for treatment. Ministry of Railways has also been running Red Ribbon Express throughout India in collaboration with Nehru Yuva Kendra, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, National AIDS Control Organisation, UNICEF, State AIDS Control Societies, National Rural Health Mission, Hindustan Latex Family Planning Promotion Trust and Rajiv Gandhi Foundation. Besides, Railways provides space at Railways stations for installing Condom Vending Machines.
The Ministry of Railways has mainstreamed HIV/AIDS Prevention and Control in its own Railway system. It provides treatment, care and support in a non-discriminatory and confidential and continued manner to all Railway health service beneficiaries. It provides testing and treatment for HIV infection, from Railways’ own funds. It ensures that information and counseling services are available as part of the Comprehensive Health Care package. It also conducts Annual Sentinel Survey to monitor the trend of infection in Railway Population from its funds.
