Pioneer News Service reported that the CBI on Friday registered another Preliminary Enquiry in the alleged coal block allocation scam against unknown persons for allocation of coal blocks to joint venture companies.

The PE will enquire into allocation of coal blocks and awarding of contracts for formation of joint ventures by government companies under the Government Dispensation Category from 1993 onwards

The is the first PE in coal block allocation scam that has been registered suo moto by the CBI and is based on source information. The other two PEs were registered following two separate references from Central Vigilance Commission.

The latest PE is the third such enquiry registered by the CBI in its ongoing probe in the coal scam and the investigation in this case will essentially be an exercise to fish the beneficiaries of coal block allocation by mining States since 1993.
