The National Committee for Protection of Natural Resources which is spearheading a campaign against illegal mining, has strongly opposed Karnataka government's move recommending reopening of eight iron ore mines in the State.

Speaking to reporters here, NCPNR Convenor S R Hiremath urged the Government not to show haste to help companies (mining lease holders) which are allegedly involved in serious irregularities.

Karnataka Mines and Geology Department Director H R Srinivasa said yesterday the Government has sought the approval of the Supreme Court appointed Central Empowered Committee on reopening of these eight mines.

Mr Hiremath said that "It appears that the Director has conveniently forgotten that there is a stay order on March three, 2011, on the mining by (the) eight companies within two km radius of Jambunateshwar temple as the mining, blasting operations have done irreparable damage to the temple.”

He also accused Srinivasa of not mentioning about a "very important letter" of Forest Department regarding "serious violations" by some of these eight companies.
