ET reported that the Supreme Court has adjourned the hearing on a case related to illegal mining in Karnataka by two weeks to enable the Central Empowered Committee to hear the responses of the affected companies and the state government.
A special three-judge bench headed by chief justice SH Kapadia said “We make it clear that this court would like to hear the parties on reclamation and rehabilitation aspect of the case at the earliest.”
The CEC, which was mandated by the Supreme Court to probe illegal mining in Karnataka, has submitted a report that recommends cancellation of 49 mining licenses in the state and capping of the state's annual iron ore production at about 30 million tonnes.
Karnataka has challenged this cap and wants to be allowed to produce up to 85 million tonnes to meet the requirements of steel sector investors.
