HT reported that about 100 Maoists stormed into the office of Kalta iron ore mine in Sundergarh district during a bandh called by the ultra left outfit in Orissa and abducted CITU leader Mr Thomas Munda.
The police said that the Maoists who came in a group asked the miners not to work during the bandh and cooperate with them in enforcing the bandh. While leaving the area, they took away the CITU leader with them.
The Maoists have called the two day bandh to protest the arrest of Maoist leader Mr Subhasree Panda and displacement of tribals in the name of industrialization.
In a press meet, CPI (M) leader Mr Bishnu Mohanty demanded adequate posting of CRPF for instilling confidence among the people who are living with the Maoist threat at Bonai subdivision in the district.
Earlier in the day, work at Kalta mines was affected after a group of Maoists had threatened to stop work.
Koida police station in charge Mr PK Sahoo said that the Maoists had then left the spot after issuing the threat.
