Even as the State grapples with demand-supply mismatch, handy micro hydel power generating units to produce 1 to 5 Kwh are set to meet the requirement of village homesteads via eco friendly units.

Already, 47 individuals in Karnataka are generating electricity by using the model.

The project has been conceived for villagers in the Western Ghat region, where small streams would be sources for generating power.

According to Mr HGH Shivanandamurthy MD of Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Ltd, the nodal agency to facilitate non conventional energy sources, the State has received 300 applications form individuals from various districts to set up the micro hydel units.

The scheme is promoted under a programme of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, which will provide a subsidy of 90% of the cost of the system, estimated between INR 60,000 and INR 200000 for a 1 to 1.5 Kwh system.

Mr Murthy said the projects are in demand in Chitradurga, Belguam, Shimoga and some parts of Mysore.
