The Minister of Steel, Mr Beni Prasad Verma has said that as per the available information, real consumption of finished steel is estimated to be 70.92 million tonnes as against production of 73.42 million tonnes during 2011-12.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha he said that steel is a de regulated sector. Therefore, for meeting any mismatch between domestic supply and demand or otherwise import / export of finished steel is also permissible.
