BL reported that another Bangladeshi barge, while loading fly ash in one of the many private jetties along the Hooghly, sank a few days ago.
Now, the number of Bangladeshi barges that sank in the river in the past one and half years is six.
Kolkata Port Trust has little to do with the accident because the movement of barges carrying Bangladeshi flags on the Hooghly is controlled by Inland Waterways Authority of India.
But the port authorities are concerned because one of the barges that sank last year is yet to be salvaged, blocking a channel and creating problems in vessel movements. The port authorities reacted by ordering suspension of barge movements on the Hooghly till a study of such obstructions is made.
