The Indian domestic market for long and flat products brought some cheers to Indian steel mills in the opening week of 2012. While the long product market exploded with an omnipresent rally in market, flat products gained selectively.
Certain inherent impediments came handy to catalyze the ignition for long products. An acute power shortage in major centers in South and logistical bottlenecks in transportation of material from Raipur played the panacea. In addition acute shortage of iron ore owing to clamp down on illegal mining has left bulk of the sponge iron manufactures in lurch. It has culminated in production shut down with re-rollers causing shortage.
On the other hand, the exchange rate that has now become 53 to a USD, kept the flat steel prices are quite firm even though we were expecting some downturn but thanks to all this, it has not happened.”
The Indian Long Product Price Index ILPPI surged by 119 points last week whereas Indian Flat Products Index IFPPI has also gone up by 43 points. The overall price index INDSPI inclined by 83 points.
