It is learnt that in the central region of Bastar in Chhattisgarh, the heartland of iron and sponge production, strike has been called by the transporters leading to scuttled supply of the raw material. The ensuing sentiment of shortage has propped the sentiments in the commodity exchange market NCDEX leading to recovery in pencil ingot prices.
However the demand fundamentals remained weak with TMT bar prices receding or remaining unchanged at most locations. But with the onset of peak summer in the coming culminating in power shortage will lead to mild revival in the prices by early May.
The Indian flat steel market, after a huge surge of about 12% to 18% in a span of 90 days (December 1st 2010 to February 28th 2011) but down by about 3% to 4% since March beginning, has seen some ray of hope for revival in last few days with large steel importers in Mumbai hiking their offers for both HRC and plates by INR 1000 per tonne to INR 1500 per tonne.
Market players feel that domestic prices for flats will strengthen in short term, but the danger persist if the gain is substantial or the import levels go down further, thus increasing gap between import and domestic levels making imports viable again.
The Indian Long Product Price Index ILPPI surged by 8 points last week whereas Indian Flat Products Index IFPPI has gone down by 45 points. The overall price index INDSPI declined by 18 points.
