Week 17 had a lukewarm opening with divergent price movements at different locations. The pencil ingot prices followed its customary flip flop trajectory exhibiting appreciation and depreciation in equal measure.
It is reminiscent of a typical commodity trading market wherein devoid of any core fundamentals the prices fluctuate within a small band mostly guided by the transient and purely speculative factors.
The TMT bar prices too maintained identical movements although remarkably there was some flutter after a slothful past.
The Indian import market is maintaining a lukewarm momentum as the flat product market continues to languish both nationally and internationally.
The international levels sliding WoW despair is becoming omnipresent. The Chinese mills have become aggressive capitalizing on freight advantage to hilt.
Some Chinese levels are as follows
HRC SS400 Grade - USD 710 per tonne CNF Mumbai
CRC - USD 820 per tonne CNF Mumbai
Plate 8 to 50 mm -USD 750 per tonne CNF Mumbai for small quantity
Stock lot plates - USD 705 per tonne CNF Mumbai
Ironically Black Sea offers are absent unable to withstand Chinese onslaught.
It is also learnt that only small HRC with coil weight of 8 tonne to 12 tonnes is being offered at Mumbai. Whereas bulk of the big coils are being diverted to greener pastures of USA and Europe from Russia as the automobile industry demand has stabilized.
Moreover with the augmented piracy risk sellers are averse to enter troubled water as the freight rates have gone up by USD 20 per tonne to cover the risk. As a result traders in India are showing proclivity for Chinese material.
The Indian Long Product Price Index ILPPI surged by 56 points last week whereas Indian Flat Products Index IFPPI also gone up by 28 points. The overall price index INDSPI inclined by 43 points.
