The slide of long product prices in India continued for the 2nd consecutive week .The ingot and TMT prices fell by up to 12% and 11% respectively and yet there was no sign of stemming.
The meltdown has defied estimates that it was short term correction after a massive rally to ease out the pockets of aberrations. Manufacturers have hiked the prices of TMT by about INR 6000 per tonne since December. The spiralling prices had spurred buyers to pre pone their buying to avoid dearer purchase latter. This insecurity ignited rampage for the material.
In the course of this quest for a cost effective buying they amassed inventory disproportionate to their requirement. As the demand from construction segment refused to match the frenzied buying prices commenced wilting.
Undoubtedly there are neutralising factors on the supply side viz shortage of iron ore and acute power shortage across the nation. The burgeoning inventory has kept any chances of early turn around at bay. The existence of toxic low priced material in the system coupled with its periodic release will coerce manufacturers into rebate sales.
It is expected that the market will bottom out after shedding another INR 1000 per tonne to INR 1500 per tonne to bring the conversion from Ingot to TMT at normal levels of INR 3500 per tonne which got bloated to INR 6000 per tonne.
Moreover with most of the MOU ‘s for long term supply already in place the demand pattern will be transparent allowing for realistic pricing in the market.
The Indian Long Product Price Index ILPPI decreased by 210 points whereas Indian Flat Products Index IFPPI dropped by 88 points. The overall price index INDSPI declined by 151 points.
