Indian steel market, despite belligerent attempt by Indian steel majors to hold the price line for both long and flat products, continued sliding last week.
Indian steel majors while holding price line for flat products for May beginning resorted to slight correction of INR 1500 per tonne to INR 2000 per tonne in a brave move to protect their margins. But the market players, including users, did not bite and a mid month correction is on the cards as inventories of some of the have started to pile up, especially for longs.
It needs to be underlined that the majors are still able to milk the market with the shortage rhetoric. It seems the market has reached pinnacle and destined for doom as their existing order books with the OEMs are getting liquidated briskly. The splutter is expected to die within a fortnight as end users are shying from new bookings.
While the long product market is reeling under low demand, which was anticipated to bloom due to heightened construction activity during this period, the havoc of position cargoes expected to lend this month on Indian shores and competitive offers from a silently belligerent China for flat products seems to be spreading its tentacles in the Indian market.
End users are expectant of a melt down to the tune of INR 10,000 per tonne by July in the backdrop of Greek financial crisis likely to impact the economy and industry in Europe thereby denting the demand in this favorite destination of flat products.
As a result of such feeble sentiments, the Indian Long Product Price Index ILPPI decreased by 117 points last week whereas Indian Flat Products Index IFPPI dropped by 41 points. The overall price index INDSPI declined by 81 points.
