Monday Market Monitor - India - WEEK 19- Long products crash by 3pct

The long product prices in India have entered an abyss. The prices have been receding in incremental proportion WoW since mid April.

All through demand growth has been brandished by the state as fallout of budgetary allocation for the housing sector. Market dwelled in this makes believe theory during rally in the wee months of the FY’10-11. The claims proved to be as hollow as the market sentiments and it became clear that it was cost thrust rather than demand suction.

The current depressive phase has entered the 5th week with no signs of let up. It needs to be clarified at no point of time demand has been the driver behind the occasional but mercurial rally in prices. The steepness of the price rise in these phases signifies its brittleness and non-durability. The spectacular rally in more than one ways has waylaid buyers and sellers into the customary traps of overstocking and overproduction the twin nemesis of stability.

One of the peculiarities of the present depression has been lack of material compounded by lack of demand. The manufacturers are having low inventory but they are unwilling to risk increased production lest it leads to a glut erasing even faint chances of turnaround.

The few straws clutch on are as follows

The conversion gap from Ingot to TMT having narrowed to the minimum of INR 3500 per tonne bottoming out can be the only option however this thumb rule can change with gap dipping in the negative by another INR 1000 per tonne.

Settlement of NCDEX on 19th might bring semblance of order and clarity in the market trends.

The cooling of weather once the monsoon sets in will bring the laborers back.

The prices are likely to have a bumpy trajectory at very low amplitude in the coming week. Operators can look with hope in last week of May early June.

The Indian Long Product Price Index ILPPI decreased by 212 points whereas Indian Flat Products Index IFPPI dropped by 17 points. The overall price index INDSPI declined by 118 points.
