The long steel product market in India gave sparkling performance last week.
The sheer force of this thrust was so emphatic that it left the market exasperated. The dividing line between the twin factors of cost push and demand pull got obfuscated in the rabble.
The price hike announced by the mills certainly set the tone for pepped up sentiments but the frenzy was due to panic among buyers as most of the steel majors had exhausted their stocks on December closing leaving buyers in lurch.
Another major reason for the panic was primarily the coking coal cost push sentiment due to flooding Queensland Region of Australia leading to shortages now and major hike on April 1st. Even small stockiest, who had never heard of coking coal, started inquiring about it.
It would be prudent to keenly observe the meanderings in the next couple of weeks whether this price escalation is sustainable. Ut market players see this frenzy to last at least till January end.
As a result, the Indian Long Product Price Index ILPPI went up by 123 points last week whereas Indian Flat Products Index IFPPI went up by 88 points. The overall price index INDSPI inclined by 106 points.
