Jammu and Kashmir's power sector has been the silent victim of the four month long violence in the state with the National Hydro Power Corporation now expressing doubts over the completion of three projects totaling 330 MW by 2012 as planned earlier.

NHPC, which was constructing Uri II with a capacity of 240 MW, Nimmo Bazgo (45 MW) and Chutak (44 MW), has cited several reasons for the delay, including the widespread unrest throughout the Kashmir Valley beginning June this year.

Inability to bring staff and labour to various sites and transfer of machinery had become near impossible during the violence that saw protesters setting fire to government property and paralysing work.

A power ministry official said that "Due to violence in J&K, NHPC's three power projects have suffered significant loss of time and thus delayed.”
