Having recently acquired Navratna status, and the consequent financial autonomy, public sector mining cum power biggie, Neyveli Lignite Corporation is gearing up to blaze a new trail.
After adding on the average a paltry 50 MW to its capacity in the last 50 years, NLC is now getting aggressive. For half a century old company operating in the booming power sector, a total installed capacity of 2,750 MW is a poor show, but the future promises to be different because to two major factors getting into coal-based power projects and now, the financial autonomy.
Neyveli Lignite Corporation has plans to become a 10,000 MW company by 2017 the terminal year of the 12th Five Year Plan period. Contrast this with the present capacity of 2,750 MW, you will see the trajectory.
In an interview with Business Line, the chairman and managing director of NLC describes the company’s upcoming march towards the goal, a goal he helped set in his previous positions as director planning and projects and general manager mines.
