Mr GK Vasan the union minister of Shipping in a written reply to Lok Sabha informed that there are at present 2 Maritime Universities in the country.

Mr Vasan informed that “These are Indian Maritime University, Chennai which has been established in the year 2008 through Indian Maritime University Act, 2008 and the Academy of Maritime Education & Training which is a deemed University in the private sector in Chennai.”

Mr Vasan clarified that “Currently, there is no proposal to set up a Maritime University in the State of Gujarat.”

He added that “Requirement of more Universities would depend on the experience gained from establishing the Indian Maritime University and other enabling factors like availability of land, resources and presence of Maritime Institutes in the region.”
