It is reported that a scrap dealer died on Saturday when a mortar shell he was apparently hammering to retrieve aluminium believing it to be a used shell exploded at his residence at Rajiv Gandhi Nagar in Pune.
The report said that the explosion injured five persons staying next door. Police suspect that the deceased collected some old mortar shells from the firing range around Dehu Road area to retrieve aluminium and one of them was live.
Mr Ramnath Pokale deputy superintendent of Police said the deceased used to deal in scrap, utensils and metal ornaments.
Many residents of Rajiv Gandhi Nagar are into the same business and collect shells and metal objects from the firing ranges. They sell the aluminium parts. We suspect Bhanjwade collected old mortar shells from some firing range near Kinaigaon, a few kilometres from Dehu Road.
