The telecom unit of the state owned Power Grid Corporation of India is in discussion with global telecommunication majors such as SingTel and British Telecom for leasing out broadband capacity on its optical fiber network.

The Delhi based power transmission major has a National Long Distance Licence and Internet Service Provider license. It also has 21,000 km of optical fiber network connecting various cities and all the North-East States.

A spokesperson for Powertel told Business Line in the next two years, the company intends to add another 10,000 route kilometer.

Optical fiber is used by telecommunication companies to transmit telephone signals, Internet communication and cable television signals.

Multinational telecom companies such as BT and SingTel provide enterprise telephony services to their corporate customers in India and connectivity between India and other countries through undersea cable networks.
