BL reported that a day after the police lathicharged hundreds of villagers opposing establishment of the proposed steel plant of POSCO India Private Limited in the Jagatsinghpur district for the second time in less than a month, a group of social activists approached the State Human Rights Commission and sought its intervention in the matter.
The activists submitted a memorandum to the Commission here urging it to conduct an inquiry into the lathicharge.
The activists, led by Odisha Jana Sammilani president Mr Rabi Das, said in their memorandum that “The police action was in utter violation of basic human rights. The manner in which the assault was committed by the police team was highly deplorable.”
They pointed out that the images of Wednesday's police action against the villagers at Nuagaon village reported in print and electronic media were quite reflective of the said fact.
