
Kalinga Times reported that 3 tribals and a policeman were injured in a clash between the police and the tribals opposing construction of a road in Kalinga Nagar industrial hub.
The tribals were injured when police fired rubber bullets and lobbed teargas shells to disperse the tribals who had gathered to oppose construction of the road.
Police, however, claimed that they tried to chase away the people following pelting of stones by some agitators at the policemen on duty.
Hundreds of police then marched forward to clear the area facilitate construction of the road.
As many as 25 platoons of policemen have been deployed in the area to prevent the agitating tribals from stopping the road construction work.
Reacting to the police action, secretary of Visthapan Virodhi Jana Manch, spearheading the agitation since the police firing incident in January 2006 in which 14 tribals were killed, said they were being targeted by the administration as they were opposing the construction of the road and the proposed steel plant project of TATA Steel in the area.
