Sembawang Engineers and Constructors, one of the largest engineering and construction companies in Southeast Asia and a wholly owned subsidiary of global conglomerate Punj Lloyd Group is pleased to announce that it has been awarded a major contract worth over USD 378 million to construct two distinctive stations Botanic Gardens and Stevens for Downtown Line 2.
The contract, awarded in a tender by the Land Transport Authority of Singapore is one of the packages of construction works to be awarded for the 16.6 kilometer DTL2 that will run from Bugis area to Bukit Panjang.
For this contract, Sembawang will be responsible for the design and construction of Botanic Gardens and Stevens stations and twin bored tunnels of 1 kilometer linking both stations. Botanic Gardens Station is sited along Bukit Timah Road near the Singapore Botanic Gardens.
Stevens Station which is sited at the junction of Stevens and Bukit Timah roads, is a stacked-tunnels station, where commuters will board and alight at separate levels for trains heading in different directions.
Mr Atul Punj chairman of Punj Lloyd Group said “Sembawang has strong expertise in this area having constructed almost a third of all metro train stations and 21% of all tracks (MRT & LRT) in Singapore. This mega contract from LTA, our second for the Downtown Line, reinforces our project execution capabilities.”
Mr Richard Grosvenor president & CEO of Sembawang said “We are delighted to clinch this project and to be involved again in the development of this important and prestigious Downtown Line. We believe our expertise in similar infrastructure construction work combined with our excellent safety record has contributed to this award.”
Work on the Botanic Gardens and Stevens stations will commence in the Q3 of 2009 and is expected to be completed in 2015. One of the key challenges for this construction will be to work within major road junctions and the close proximity to the existing flyover and residential area.
One of three DTL2 interchange stations, the Botanic Gardens Station will serve both DTL and Circle Line.
When completed in 2015, DTL2 will have 12 stations and run from Bugis along the heavy Bukit Timah traffic corridor to help ease congestion. Commuters traveling from Bukit Panjang to the city will be able to reduce their travel time.
The construction of the Downtown Line is part of the nation’s plan to develop a comprehensive rail network system to meet its fast growing future travel needs. The Downtown Line will be built in three stages.
