After achieving several benchmarks in steel production and also in techno economic parameters, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited’s Visakhapatnam Steel Plant has taken up 21 Cleaner Development Mechanism projects perhaps the best in the steel industry with the major aim to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 2.1 million tonnes annually.
Out of the seven cycles for completing each CDM project, two cycles have already been completed for 10 projects.
Host Country approval which is the most vital thing has also been obtained by RINL from National CDM Authority for two projects namely Waste Heat Recovery from Stoves of Blast Furnace 3, Power Generation using waste pressure at Top Pressure Recovery Turbine of BF 3.
The major CDM projects include
1. 20.6 MW Waste Heat Recovery project - CER of 220612 tonnes
2. Recovery of LD Gas from Convertor 1 & 2 in SMS 2 - CER of 107756 tonnes
3. 2 X 60 MW Power Plant - CER of 865631 tonnes
4. Power generation GETS (BF-3) - CER of 95200 tonnes
5. Variable frequency drives in electrical systems - CER of 74460 tonnes
It is noteworthy to mention that these projects are being implemented with its internal resources and expertise.
RINL has been considered as a “Green Paradise” in the Indian Steel Industry because of its thick vegetation in and around the plant.
