Daily Pioneer reported that Steel Authority of India Ltd’s Bhilai Steel Plant has been making all possible efforts to control pollution and overall improvement in its environmental performance.
A press statement of the plant said that “Right since inception, BSP has been responsible towards its environment conservation commitments. In fact, all facilities of production right from the first production unit that came up in the year 1959 under 1 million tonne plan to the units that were commissioned under its 4 million tonne expansion plan were provided with the pollution control systems which were much beyond the contemporary needs of that time. In between, the plant has proactively made huge investments for technological up gradation and revamping of existing systems and facilities.”
Establishing a comprehensive environmental monitoring & management plan in collaboration with renowned Australian consultant, BHP-Kinhill that has culminated in revamping of the existing systems and setting up of a state of the art environmental laboratory; installation of twin hearth furnaces along with Gas Cleaning Plants by phasing out pollution prone Open hearth furnaces; installation of zero leak, IKIO doors based on latest Japanese technology in Coke oven batteries 3, 4, 5 & 6 and use of HPLA technology in most of the batteries as also the procurement of modern charging cars in Battery no: 2,3,4,5,6 &10 for fugitive emission control are some steps and measures that have exemplified BSP’s commitment towards environmental management and technological up gradation.
The per tonne of crude steel water consumption of BSP that compares favourably with the best in industry will be further brought down with the 30 million litre/day sewage recycling plant installed in the year 2010.
BSP is the first integrated unit in SAIL to Implement Environment Management System in the entire plant, starting with plate mill way back in 1999. In August, 2011, Bureau of Indian Standards has certified the Environment Management System, ISO 14001:2004, for a period of 3 years from July 2011.
