
Indian steel secretary Mr DRS Choudhary has reviewed the progress of the ongoing INR 12,000 crore modernization and expansion program at the Rourkela Steel Plant of Steel Authority of India Ltd which would increase the plant's capacity to 4.5 million tonne.
Citing the examples of world class steel companies, Mr Choudhary advised SAIL to gear up to meet international norms in various fields.
The steel secretary discussed the issue of modernization and expansion besides the company's future plans with senior officers during his two day visit to the plant.
SAIL Chairman Mr CS Verma exhorted RSP officers and workers to make every effort to fulfill the targets given by the secretary. He expressed confidence that RSP, one of the strongest units of SAIL, would play a key role in taking the company forward.
Mr UP Singh Joint Secretary Steel and RSP CEO Mr GS Prasad were also present.
The INR 12,000 crore update program would take RSP's hot metal production capacity to 4.5 million tonne from the existing 2 million tonne. As part of the modernization program a state of the art new plate mill would come up in RSP, besides other facilities like a new blast furnace complex which would be among the biggest in the country, a raw material handling plant, new sinter plant no 3, 7 meter tall coke oven battery and strand slab caster in SMS-2.
