It is reported that steel giant TATA Steel will launch a GBP 60 million emissions reduction program at its Port Talbot plant this week.
The GBP 60 million project, first announced back in 2008, will cut the carbon footprint of the plant by some 240,000 tonnes per year.
Mr Carwyn Jones first minister will join chief executive of TATA Steel Europe, American Kirby Adams, and the managing director of Corus Strip Products UK.
TATA will outline how the program will reduce the emission of particulate matter by some 40 tonnes per year at the steelworks. And by recovering by product gas which was formerly flared off, the project enables the steelworks to recycle substantial quantities of gas as a fuel with both environmental and commercial benefits.
A spokesman for the plant said that “The GBP 60 million investment represents a huge vote of confidence in the steel industry in Wales an investment maintained during a period of severe economic recession thus protecting and creating jobs.” He added that “It also represents a vital inward investment to the economy in Wales as indigenous have benefited with orders from the project.”
