The Hindu reported that Telugu Desam Party demanded scrapping of GO No 84 issued allotting 2 thousand million cubic feet of water to the steel plant of Brahmani Industries Limited, to safeguard the farmers interests.
M Venkataswamy Reddy TDP district general secretary told a news conference at Kadapa Press Club that Brahmani Industries planned to reduce costs by drawing water from Mylavaram reservoir, which was 5 kilometers away from the steel plant, as taking water from Gandikota reservoir nearby could cost around INR 10 crore,
He informed that “On the other hand, AP Genco’s Rayalaseema Thermal Power Plant also in Jammalamadugu constituency was allotted water from Brahmamsagar reservoir, which was 50 kilometers away and entailed an expenditure of several crore of rupees. “
He said that “The government’s double standards are evident by favoring BIL, a private firm compared to RTPP.”
He added that “BIL is trying to draw water from 187 feet level in Mylavaram reservoir, whose dead storage was at the 191 feet level.”
