Projects today reported that Toshiba JSW Turbine and Generator, a 25:75 JV between JSW Group and Japan based Toshiba Corporation, is setting up a facility in Chennai to manufacture steam turbines and generators for thermal power plants.
Toshiba JSW has signed an MoU with the Tamil Nadu Government to ease the process of setting up a production unit. The MoU allows Toshiba JSW to lease land for the construction of manufacturing facilities on a site in Chennai.
As per report, the plant is expected to come up on 400,000 square meters and the company is hoping to invest about USD 160 million in plant and manufacturing equipment over the next 5 years.
However, Toshiba JSW will use the proposed facility to manufacture mid to large sized steam turbines and generators, ranging from 500 MW to 1,000 MW, for super critical thermal power plants. Construction is scheduled to start in July 2009 and the manufacturing is expected to start in January 2011.
Keihin Operations, Toshiba's power equipment production facility in Yokohama is likely to support the company in ramping up manufacturing and in working toward establishing an independent production scale of 3,000 MW a year.
