German car maker Volkswagen said it clocked a 140% growth in total sales to 78,408 units during the calendar year 2011 compared to 32,627 units in 2010.

Mr Neeraj Garg sales india director (member of board) passenger cars division of Volkswagen Group said in a statement issued said that “Despite the ups and downs over the last six months, we have continued to invest in the market by introducing new products, expanding our reach and refreshing our existing models.”

The two new carlines the Passat with BlueMotion Technologies and the Jetta have shown strong growth with the Passat selling 1,170 units since its launch in April and the Jetta 1,688 units since August.

Volkswagen’s Polo and Vento range models reported sales of 74,305 units for the January to December 2011 period.

Mr Garg added that “These results give us the confidence that the brand is on the right track.”
