
BL reported that West Quay Multiport Private Ltd a Mumbai based port infrastructure company, began work on West Quay -6 berth in the inner harbour of Visakhapatnam port on Tuesday.
The bhoomi puja was performed in the port in the presence of the Mr Ajeya Kallam chairman of Visakhapatnam Port.
According to Mr GMT Saai Kumar GM (Civil), West Quay is a special purpose vehicle formed by the ABG-LDA Bulk Handling Pvt Ltd and ABG Infralogistics Ltd for the construction and development of WQ-6 in the inner harbour on design, build, finance, operate and transfer basis.
He said the concession agreement was signed in July, 2010, between the Visakhapatnam port and the company and the berth would be completed in 24 months at a cost of INR 150 crore.
The port had allocated 2.5 acres of area in the inner harbour for the construction of the berth and 12.5 acres for the stockyard.
Mr Kumar said that “We will handle dry bulk cargo such as LAM coke, PET coke, granite blocks, and steel products. We will begin with half a million tonnes and the maximum cargo to be handled at the terminal may be six million tonnes a year.”
