ABC.net re[ported that Australian steel maker BlueScope Steel will not comment on a newspaper report that it has lodged a submission against the proposed merger of BHP and Rio Tinto iron ore operations with the competition regulator.

In response to requests by the ABC for clarification on the contents of its submission, BlueScope sent this written reply “The ACCC is conducting an important assessment that will affect the future of the Australian steel industry. Interactions with regulators are considered confidential in nature and therefore BlueScope Steel does not propose to make any further comment.”

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has also refused to comment, saying submissions on proposed company mergers are not released publicly.

The Financial Review reported the company put in a submission last week that sets out its strong objections to the merger proposal.
