BelTA reported that Belarusian Steel Works and Italian company Danieli signed an agreement to build a new wire rod mill at Zhlobin in Gomel Oblast on August 31st 2011.

The EUR 100 million project is scheduled for implementation within 30 months.

The capacity of the new mill will make up 700,000 tonnes per year. The facility will produce straight bars and rolled wire.

In 1982 Italy’s Danieli became the sub supplier of equipment for Belarusian Steel Works. In 1987 and 1991 Danieli provided equipment for hardware shops of Belarusian Steel Works. In 2006 BMZ and Danieli agreed to provide equipment and technologies in order to raise the efficiency of electric furnaces No 2 and No 3 using alternative energy. The contract was implemented in 2007 at furnace No 2 and in 2008 at furnace No 3. In 2008 BMZ and Danieli signed a contract to upgrade continuous casting machine No 3. In December 2009 the machine was launched and in March 2010 steel plant No 2 which operates this facility started working at full capacity. The plant’s reconstruction will ramp up the production of steel from 650,000 tonnes to 1 million tonnes per year.

BMZ was founded in 1984. The company specializes in cast sections, rolled sections, bar sections and reinforcing bars, metal cord, wire for high-pressure hoses and other kinds of wire. BMZ exports over 85% of the make. It employs over 12,000 people.
