It is reported that Big River Steel has turned to a German contractor to build the USD 1.1 billion mini mill at Osceola, Ark.

Mr John Correnti a former Nucor steel executive heading the Big River venture also will borrow part of the construction money from German financiers.

Steel mill specialist SMS Siemag will build the plant. The firm is part of SMS Holding GmbH, a 13,000 employee construction and mechanical engineering firm headed by industrialist Heinrich Weiss, based in Hilchenbach, Germany.

Construction is expected to begin after September. The plant, located on the Mississippi River just outside metropolitan Memphis, is being scaled for 525 employees.

Mr Grant Tennille, Arkansas economic development director, said that “They still think that a Q3 closing is within reach and they plan on breaking ground the same day they close. So we may begin to see construction probably in the September time frame. If things slip a little bit, it’ll probably be closer to November.”
