The Australian reported that BlueScope Steel's major restructure continues apace with its technology division the latest unit to undergo a massive overhaul, resulting in the departure of its IT chief.
As per report, the troubled steelmaker will place greater responsibility for IT on the various geographies it operates in, reducing the reliance on a central technology team.
The changes will see chief information officer Mr Andrew Baker leave the organization he joined in February 2006.
Sources told The Australian that Mr Baker will leave the organization by the end of 2011.
A BlueScope spokesman confirmed the move and said the technology team was undergoing a restructure to more appropriately align with the company's new business structure. He added that "Mr Andrew Baker will depart at year end as the restructure will be complete. The corporate technology team continues to operate with a focus on global strategy, governance, security and standards. The three geographically dispersed regional businesses (Australia New Zealand, Asia and North America) will take on greater operational responsibility for executing the IT strategy within the governance framework created by corporate IT."
Mr Baker, who spent 14 years with Accenture, moved to BlueScope from confectionary maker Mars Corp where he was supply chain execution manager for Asia Pacific.
Meanwhile, it is unclear how the revamp will affect the future of its multimillion dollar IT outsourcing contract with long term partner CSC. CSC provides consultancy, applications development and support, disaster recovery, systems integration and end user services on myriad technology platforms. The four year CSC contract expires in December 2014, but BlueScope has another two 2 year options to keep the service. The relationship began around a decade ago and the agreement was last renewed in 2010.
