China Steel Corporation was the biggest winner in the 2012 Taiwan Corporate Sustainability Report Awards announced, garnering four major prizes including the Best of the Best Award.

The company and around 30 other winners received their awards from Vice President Wu Den-yih who described the CSR Awards as the highest honors for responsible Taiwanese enterprises.

Since President Ma Ying-jeou came into office in 2008, the government has highly valued eco-friendly industries such as green energy and sustainable architecture, Wu said.

The vice president said he hoped that local enterprises and the Taiwanese people can work together to support and monitor the government in the continuation of sustainable developmental policies.

Dr Eugene Chien chairman of the Taiwan Institute for Sustainable Energy, the organizer of the annual awards, noted the substantial improvement in the quality and quantity of reports submitted this year. Dr Chien said that all past entrants since the CSR Awards' inauguration in 2008 represented 58 percent of Taiwan's GDP in terms of business volume. Total business turnover of participants in this year alone amounts to 43% of the nation's GDP.

In terms of quality, 80% of this year's entrants were able to comply with the AA1000 and GRI (Global Reporting Initiative, the nonprofit organization that produces one of the world's most widely adapted sustainability-reporting standards) G3 requirements for third party audits, a significant improvement from 2010 when only 56% of entrants met the same requirements.

The TAISE said that thirty nine of the 44 entrants also disclosed carbon emission information in their reports and applied the more meticulous materiality analysis in their methodologies, making the reports the highest in overall quality in the awards' history.

In addition to the CSR Awards' newly introduced top prize, the Best of the Best Award, China Steel Corporation also won the golden award in the manufacturing industry category (along with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd and AU Optronics Corporation), the newly introduced Best Website for CSR Disclosure Award (along with Sinyi Realty Inc. and Southern Taiwan Science Park Administration), and the also newly introduced Corporate Climate Change Communication Award (along with TSMC and Taiwan Power Company).
