The Montreal Gazette reported that Quebec's biggest steel fabricator Canam Group Inc, via its Structal Bridges unit, has won a CAD 12 million contract for the replacement Memorial Bridge, a 77 year old lift bridge between Kittery and Portsmouth.
The 900 foot lift bridge spanning the Piscataqua River was closed in July 2011 because of its deteriorating condition. The contract was awarded by a unit of Walsh Construction Co.
Structal Bridges will fabricate three through truss spans, each 300 feet, and two towers for the bridge’s moveable section. It will also supply the steel structure to replace the main bridge approaches.
The fabrication work will be done at the Canam plant in Claremont, which can now handle large scale US projects after a major modernization.
The Memorial Bridge contract is due for completion by early 2013. The new bridge is scheduled to open in July 2013.
Structal Bridges will also fabricate and install box girders and structural bearings for the North Channel Bridge Replacement Project in Cornwall, under a contract with the Aecon Group Inc.
