It is reported that three local authorities near the Corus steel plant on the Dutch coast will next week make an announcement about cancer risks associated with the factory's exhaust gases.
As per repot, the municipalities of Velsen, Heemskerk and Beverwijk are inviting citizens to meetings scheduled for October 7th 2009.
The Institute for National Health & Environment confirmed that lung cancer is significantly more prevalent in some of the areas near the steel plant. One of the causes could be the emission of pollutants by the steel production facility.
At the meetings on October 7th 2009, speakers from the RIVM, the Environment Ministry and the provincial government will explain the situation. There will also be a representative for Corus, the British owner of the Dutch steel plant, formerly known as Royal Hoogovens.
