Yonhap reported that Daewoo Engineering & Construction Co has evacuated almost all of its workers from Libya amid growing tensions in the North African country.
Daewoo Engineering said in a statement that a total of 2,698 workers were evacuated from Libya as of March 6th 2011, with 327 skeleton staff, including 49 South Koreans, remaining at its construction sites to maintain them.
A Greek flagged ferry carrying 1,118 workers left the northern Libyan port city of Benghazi and arrived at the port in Chania on the island of Crete, located in the southern part of Greece.
A group of 1,288 workers from Tripoli were also brought to Chania early Sunday, while 292 workers are scheduled to arrive there on March 7th 2011.
With Libya lurching toward civil war, Daewoo Engineering started getting its workers out of the country using three vessels. Of the evacuated workers, 1,908 Bangladeshi workers were to be flown home via two Spanish chartered planes and other workers, including 164 South Koreans, will take chartered flights of Korean Air Lines Co. The South Korean workers are scheduled to arrive at Incheon International Airport, South Korea's main gateway.
Daewoo Engineering said it will evacuate the remaining workers from Libya if the situation in the country worsens.
